Transformative Leadership and Mentorship
Across Africa, women and girls continue to be systematically excluded from peace processes, governance structures, and leadership spaces — despite being among those most profoundly affected by conflict, instability, and poor governance.
Daraja Letu Foundation is working to change this through its Transformative Leadership and Mentorship programme, which advances the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda at community, national, and regional levels.
Our work in this area is anchored in the localisation and implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 — the landmark global framework calling for the full and equal participation of women in peace and security processes.
We translate this global commitment into grassroots action, ensuring that girls and young women in Nairobi, Kisumu, and Homa Bay understand their rights, develop their leadership capacities, and actively engage in the governance structures that shape their lives.

Mentorship Programs for Adolescent Girls and Boys
Beyond the Academy, Daraja Letu runs active mentorship programmes targeting adolescent girls and boys in Homa Bay, Kisumu, and Nairobi's Kabiria informal settlement. These programs are deliberately holistic — integrating Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), and peace education into a unified framework that addresses the interconnected challenges young people face. Young people enrolled in our mentorship programmes do not just receive information — they develop the skills and agency to become active participants in peace and security processes in their communities. They learn to identify and challenge gender-based violence, advocate for their rights, and take leadership roles within their schools, families, and communities.
IMatter Campaign — Women, Peace and Security
In partnership with OXFAM under the IMatter Campaign, Daraja Letu has trained girls and young women on UNSCR 1325, providing them with a clear understanding of national WPS frameworks and practical tools to engage with them. This campaign has directly strengthened the capacity of young women to participate meaningfully in peace and governance processes, connecting their lived experiences to global frameworks for change.
Our Impact
Through our leadership and mentorship work, Daraja Letu Foundation has trained cohorts of girls and young women in governance and feminist leadership, facilitated youth representation in local and regional decision-making spaces, built the capacity of girls' and youth-led groups to engage in advocacy, and directly contributed to policy processes through grassroots representation and voice amplification. We know that when girls lead, communities thrive. When young women have a seat at the peace table, the agreements that result are more durable, more just, and more reflective of the full community's needs. That is the change we are building — one leader at a time.
